You will write an essay comparing and contrasting different physical activities. Overview of assignment

Purpose: to compare, evaluate and inform

Audience: teens and young adults

Topic: Consider the different physical activities you have tried in this class, and any others you have tried in the past.  I have done swimming,walking,bowling,and archery.

  • ****How do they compare as far as fun, convenience, expense and safety. 
  • ****How do they help or provide opportunities for aerobic, flexibility, balance, and strength training?
  • ****What are the advantages and disadvantages of each activity? 
  • ****You will need to do a little research to find facts, statistics, or quotes from experts you can use in your essay. Each paragraph should include a fact/statistic/quote
  • ****Remember to keep track of your sources. You will need a works cited or references included in the essay!

You may choose to organize this essay in one of two ways:

A) by activity (each paragraph in the body of the essay will analyze one activity, such as snowboarding), or B) by issue (each paragraph in the body of the essay will deal with one topic, such as safety)

Length: at least 400 words.

Overview of grading This essay will be graded on the six traits of writing. Ideas & content will count 50%. Organization 10% Voice 10% Word choice 10% Sentence fluency 10% Conventions 10%. Here is a list of what criteria I expect in each paragraph!

1. Begin with a thesis statement about your general experiences with physical activities. Then, in two or three sentences, give a few specific activities and your experiences with them. Introduction: Write at least four complete sentences.
2. EITHER A) Choose one of the activities you’ve tried and discuss it in terms of fun, expense, etc. OR B) Choose one aspect (fun, expense, etc) and discuss how each of the activities rates for that aspect. Either way, include one fact, statistic or direct quote about an activity or aspect, AND include your personal experiences. Topic sentence, then three+ sentences with supporting details and examples

6. Make an overall evaluation of the activities you have tried. Include a statement about which would be most beneficial to your health and fitness (and why), and a statement about which you would be most likely to continue to practice and enjoy over your adult life (and why). You might include information about activities you would like to try in the future. Conclusion: At least three complete sentences
(below main essay) List all of the places where you found information. Cite your sources! Works cited: The author’s name (last name first) should be listed first, if you know the author. The title of the book, website or article is next. Include the url’s of any websites.
