Workplace injuries and exposures are covered under workers’ compensation in most cases. Unfortunately, many of these injuries and exposures were preventable, but employees failed to take the necessary precautions as instructed or use unapproved actions and techniques that increase the risk of injury or illness.
Reflect on such a situation you are aware of, or imagine if it were to happen in your workplace. Do you feel workers’ compensation should apply to an employee who knowingly failed to follow policy or use standard precautions to prevent an incident? Do you feel there should be disciplinary action in addition to the injury, illness, or exposure for failing to follow policy or use precautions? Why, or why not?
