Nurse’s Role in Improving Health Literacy

The nurse plays an important role as the patient advocate in improving the health literacy of patients. According to McGonigle and Mastrian (2015), “Those persons with low health literacy have less ability to manage a chronic illness properly and tend to use more healthcare services than those who are more literate” (p. 289). Nurse’s should assess the education level, and understanding patients have by asking questions and using positive, open communication. Providing information that is easily understood by patients based on their basic literacy is beneficial and essential. “Nurses can also help people navigate complex healthcare systems, prepare them to communicate productively with other healthcare providers, and provide respectful and caring environments” (Protheroe & Rowlands, 2013, p. 21).

Evaluating Online Health Information

When searching for health information online, it is necessary to verify the source of information. The U.S. National Library of Medicine (2016) provides a tutorial that “teaches you how to evaluate the health information that you find on the Web” (para. 1). “This tutorial will teach you how to evaluate health information found on the internet. Using the internet to find health information is like going on a treasure hunt. You could find some real gems, but you could also end up in some strange and dangerous places” (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2016, para. 1).This website provides information to help individuals determine if the information found online is reliable. It is beneficial to verify the credibility of sites to ensure we get the most accurate and up to date information provided by experts rather than believing information obtained through random sites. Websites can be developed by anyone, so it is crucial to confirm the validity of reports and recommendations being made.

Assisting Patients in Becoming Informed Consumers

According to McGonigle and Mastrian (2015) “Persons living with a chronic disease who have Internet access are likely to use the Internet for blogging and online discussion forums, activities popularly referred to as peer-to-peer support” (p. 289). Patient education is one of the main ways to impact health outcomes and overall patient understanding. “Clinicians who have been practicing for some time recognize that informed patients have better outcomes and pay more attention to their overall health and changes in their health than those who are poorly informed” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 289). Nurses must be prepared to guide patients in the direction of credible online resources and be involved in the development of health education tools. “They need to assess patients’ willingness to learn, their reading ability, the means by which they learn best, and their existing knowledge about the subject. Nurses also need to take cultural differences and language differences into account when teaching their patients” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 294).
