Visual (rhetorical) Analysis Assignment Sheet

Introduction: As we’ve learned thus far, we should not only work to know ourselves and where we come from as humans, but also others around us. As Americans, we believe that our country is one of the best countries to live in and many Americans are proud to be citizens of this country. With our previous units and the ideas stated above in mind, we should take Gee’s advice and work to improve our American society by looking at it critically from the inside. There are many human rights problems that are present in America every day.

A few examples of these issues are:
-Mental Health: “Mental health care is one of the biggest unmet needs of our time. Nearly one in two people in the U.S. will suffer from depression, anxiety disorders or another mental health ailment at some point in their life, and about one in 17 Americans currently has a serious mental illness” (ScientificAmerican.com).
-Poverty (subcategories include homelessness and hunger): “19.4 million Americans live in extreme poverty. This means their family’s cash income is less than half of the poverty line, or about $10,000 a year for a family of four. They represented 6.1 percent of all people and 45.1 percent of those in poverty…” (WorldHunger.org).
-Stereotyping: According to some research out of the University of Chicago as reported by Diversity Digest and US News, “[About] 57 percent of non-African-Americans rated African-Americans as less intelligent than whites and 30 percent of African-Americans themselves rated African-Americans as less intelligent than whites; 62 percent of the entire sample rated African-Americans as lazier than whites; and more than 3 out of 4 survey respondents said that African-Americans are more inclined than whites to prefer welfare over work” (USNews.com).
-Military (specif. sexual assault): “Within the recent military report was an anonymous survey…which found that 14,900 service members experienced some kind of sexual assault in 2016…But 58 percent of victims experienced reprisals or retaliation for reporting sexual assault, the report showed” (NBCNews.com).

Do any of the above statistics surprise you? What do you think it would take to convince you to do something about the above issues in America as either an American citizen or a student in America? Note: In addition, you may see HumanRightsWatch.org via the following link to gain more ideas on this topic: https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2017/country-chapters/united-states.

This unit will: work to assess who/what companies are working to solve the human rights issues, how the issues are brought to light, and how rhetoric is used in a visual format to get the attention of Americans who may be able to help solve or who need to know about these vital human rights issues.
This unit will consist of 3 parts:
Part 1)
We will learn about the rhetorical situation and rhetorical triangle. Then, we will view a Habitat for Humanity Commercial titled “What we Build”. Then, together as a class, we will analyze how this commercial uses rhetoric to convince us to participate in the Habitat for Humanity program in some way.
Long Commercial – Habitat: What we Build

Part 2)
A) Then, in groups, you will be assigned a human rights issue. Your group will assess the problem and design/research solutions.
B) You must then find an advertisement that offers a solution or aid for your assigned human rights problem (this may be a public service announcement, political ad, or advertisement for a product or company).
C) If you feel the ad. is lacking, then make note of this in a 5-8 sentence paragraph where you discuss why or why not the ad. is effective in convincing the audience to take action. (Be prepared to present your: human rights issue, solution(s), the existing ad. you found, and your analysis paragraph to the class.)
D) Finally, you will create your own advertisement or public service announcement advertising a product, service, company or the human rights issue in general that will include the elements of logos, pathos, and ethos with the goal of spurring your classmates to care about and possibly take action toward the human rights issue you’ve been assigned. These 30 second to 2 minute videos that you will write, produce, film, etc. yourselves, will be presented to the class. We will vote and extra credit will be given to each group who participates with more extra credit given to the best video.

(See below for Part 3.)
Part 3) (For A 10% Essay Grade)
Choose one of the following advertisements/public service announcements and write a 3-4 page analysis that explores how the advertisement uses rhetoric to convince its viewers (note: do not use first or second person here ((I or you))) of something. For example, does the advertisement convince you to donate to a fund to help refugees or does it work to convince you to elect someone for office?
