Story-Problem at the Courthouse

A local municipality has been experiencing a larger-than-usual volume of cases pertaining to arrests and misdemeanors. The local community members have been protesting outside of the courthouse. Because of the recent high-profile cases, the increase of parking and other ticket offenses have flooded the court system with numerous cases. Given state cutbacks, the municipality was expected to share information technology (IT) resources with a local community college that is about 20 miles away, and the network is interconnected using a metropolitan area network (MAN). When the state cut the funding, a rush to come to a solution occurred, and the IT company that was the lowest bidder was given the job of accomplishing the MAN.

The courthouse has also taken on additional caseloads because of the ongoing construction project that has been occurring at the courthouse in a neighboring municipality. The additional network traffic has caused some major issues with network speed and performance at both locations (the courthouse and the college). The IT staff at the college was asked to assess the situation, and the conclusion was made that the local municipality is using an outdated and inefficient mix of networking topologies. Apparently, this was overlooked when the MAN was set up to cut costs and finish the job quickly.

Given the interdependency of networking architecture components and technologies, it is imperative that personnel who are engaging in networking projects consider all endpoints of connectivity. Even if the budget does not permit actively addressing all of the issues that are present, documentation of the entire network architecture and its dependencies is a task that all parties should be responsible for. Awareness is one of the key components of being able to efficiently accomplish each phase of the networking project at the most optimal performance level. The cost of not considering all areas of connectivity can outweigh the perceived cost benefits of modifying existing modes of connection.
