NOAA Activity Part 1: Ocean Exploration

This is the first step to a three part project.

Navigate to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) site at http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/

Select “What We Do” from the menu, then select “Oceans.” You can scroll all the way down the page to “Oceans,” or just choose the button on the right-hand side of the page. Choose “Ocean Exploration” in the Oceans section. Choose an explorative mission that took place at a marine sanctuary or an ecological preserve.

Review the chosen exploration.

Develop a 10- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation.

Address the following in your presentation:

    • Start with the big picture
      • Describe the two ways that Earth’s internal structure can be divided (based on chemical composition and on physical properties)
      • Then describe at least one of the early research theories about the origins of life on Earth, and relate that to the ocean.
    • From that big picture, move to a specific research mission from the NOAA website.
      • Describe the mission that you chose, and explain what kind of research they are doing. Be sure you choose a research mission!
      • List the goals and objectives of the mission and explain how it relates to the National Ocean Service’s overarching mission.
      • List the areas to be explored by the mission.
      • Explain how the data were collected. List the modern tools of research the team used, and explain what modern technologies were used.
      • What challenges did the team encounter?
      • Explain whether the explorative mission was successful in its findings.
      • How can the information gathered from the mission benefit the field of oceanography?
    • Don’t forget that your project needs to meet the other requirements of the rubric, too (you have to read the rubric to see how the assignment will be graded).

List major points in the slides. Include detailed explanations in the speaker notes section that correlate to each point.

Include videos, audio, photos, diagrams, or graphs as appropriate.

Format your presentation consistent with APA guidelines.

  • Describe at least one of the early research theories about the origins of life on Earth.
  • List the modern tools of research used in your chosen ocean exploration.
  • List the goals and objectives of the mission and how it relates to the National Ocean Service’s overarching mission.
  • List the areas to be explored by the mission.
  • What challenges did the team encounter?
