Explain the process of evolution as it relates to the origin of life

Background

Darwin's_finches_by_Gould.jpg

Evolution is the process through which a gene pool changes. These changes can be due to a variety of factors, as explained through these videos about natural and speciation:

Natural Selection (12:34) https://youtu.be/9UvlqAVCoqY (Links to an external site.)

Speciation (10:24) https://youtu.be/cj8dDTHGJBY (Links to an external site.)

Some examples of evolution include the changes the United States population has seen since the arrival of the first colony of settlers in the early 17th century. Our population now includes many variations of races and ethnicities, a larger set of age groups, and more variations in body type. Every ten years a census is taken of our population, and evidence from each census reflects that US demography is increasingly becoming more diverse as more people identify as belonging to two or more races, and large groups of people from other nations migrate to the US for opportunity and to escape oppression.

Another example of evolution is shown through the change in coloring of the peppered moth due to a genetic mutation resulting from the presence of soot on tree bark during the Industrial Revolution. The mutation of the peppered moth is explained more in this article:https://askabiologist.asu.edu/peppered-moth (Links to an external site.) (1033 words).

Using APA Style, create a paper with four sections, one for each essay question. Remember to use APA Style when citing the videos or any other references you use. Please visit the Writing Center in the Study Hall and Resource Center (SHARC) (Links to an external site.) for help with APA Style and writing papers.

Question 1:

In the Natural Selection Crash Course video (Links to an external site.), Hank talks about how peppered moths typically had light color and only 2% of peppered moths had a dark color. Then the coal powered industrial revolution in England spread enough smoke and soot that it made the environment much darker. This allowed the dark version of the peppered moth to stay hidden from birds while the lighter version of the moth was made easy prey for birds. By 1895 dark colored peppered moths made up 95% of the moth population.

For this essay question, please research and find another example of natural selection. Please summarize the example you selected in your own words and make use of a t least one reference. Your essay response should be at least 150 words long. Remember to cite the video and any other references you use in your response using APA Style.

Question 2:

In the Natural Selection Crash Course video (start at 7:40) (Links to an external site.) Hank talks about phenotypes and genotypes. A phenotype is the outwardly observable characteristics of an organism or species.

What is a genotype and how does natural selection work with genotypes? Please do some research using the textbook or online resources to find the answer to this question. Write an answer of at least 150 words. Cite at least one reference and remember to cite the video and any other references you use in your response using APA Style.

Question 3:

There are several “modes of selection” covered in the Crash Course video (start at 8:11) (Links to an external site.). One of these modes is artificial selection. In a response of at least 150 words, please define artificial selection and use your favorite plant or animal that was created using artificial selection as an example.  Cite at least one reference and remember to cite the video and any other references you use in your response using APA Style.

Question 4:

In Speciation Crash Course video (start at 4:22) (Links to an external site.) we learn about different kinds of speciation including allopatric speciation and sympatric speciation.  Summarize using your own words the definition and example of sympatric speciation that Hank gives in the video. Your response should be at least 150 words long. Remember to cite the video and any other references you use in your response using APA Style.
