Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations

In 2005, the 9/11 Commission gave their final report on the status of their recommendations. They assessed the implementation of their recommendations in the form of letter grades. Of the 41 recommendations listed, a total of 28 had a letter grade of a C or below. When the Commission reviewed the ongoing efforts again in 2006, few or no improvements were found.

In 2007, the House of Representatives had a congressional meeting to address the lack of improvement in the implementation of the recommendations. They went over each of the recommendations and discussed how to ensure their effective implementation. Since then, the Department of Homeland Security, has examined the continuing progress in executing these recommendations.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapters 12 and 13 in the online article The 9/11 Commission Report. This time, focus on how to implement the recommended changes by the 9/11 Commission.

Review the online article Department of Homeland Security: Progress in Implementing 9/11 Commission Recommendations and the article “Miles to Go.” Reflect on the progress related to the implementation of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations.

Reflect on the recommendations you used in Discussion 1. Think about whether or not the implementation of each has been effective, and if not, how it could be more effective.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the recommendations you used in the first Discussion this week. Then explain the effectiveness of the implementation of the recommendations. Be sure to explain why it has been effective or, if not, how it could be more effective. Be specific and use examples illustrate your explanation.

Note: Put the name of the recommendation you selected in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who selected a recommendation that you did not.
