Ethical Position

An ethical position about the problem of clinical placement in our nursing programs today is that although in some facilities it has been difficult placing students. Many facilities depending on their location may find it difficult placing students requiring educators to seek other options for providing education. Some facilities may require that students drive a distance to obtain necessary clinical assignments as needed. It is important for clinical assignments to reflect the area of study, so that the theory relates to their clinical environment. As stated by Bishol, Ohlsson, Engstrom, Johansson, & Gustafsson, (2013) , it is essential that the clinical environment meets the demands concerning a good learning environment so that the students feel that learning is valuable and follows a progression. If a facility is unable to provide students with various experiences, other teaching strategies should be developed. For example simulation is a great strategy which can be utilized to provide education on nursing skills, communication, team work, critical thinking skills, and leadership skills. As stated by Gates, Parr, & Hughen, (2011), patient simulation has the ability to standardize the types of patients and disease processes encountered by students, ensuring that they have similar experiences which can be adjusted accordingly. Simulation provides an alternative to some clinical situations, but does not replace real patient care, which hopefully can be obtained as necessary for student skills and development. As stated by Bishol, Ohlsson, Engstrom, Johansson, & Gustafsson, (2013), in order to achieve a good learning environment with each clinical placement with involvement from nursing staff, and educators in order to provide academic and practical learning and skills.

LAVA Initial post

The biggest ethical issue I face with students in the clinical setting is unsafe health care practices and working conditions. Some of the nurses in clinical settings do not possess the ethical views that I want students to have toward patient care. I spend a lot of time trying to calm down students who have witnessed things that go totally against what is taught in nursing school. It is very important for the nursing profession to be grounded in ethical values. Ethics is part of everything a nurse does. It is embedded in everything we do everyday. Sometimes nurses may be confused about what to do or their hands are tied and are unable to do something (Debedrosian, 2015) and the nurses is stressed over this conflict. Working with students in clinical settings requires the nurse educator to educate the student on these issues. Every place I have ever taken students ethical issues regarding patient care is present. A lot of post conferencing after clinical is spent discussing these issues. Clinical learning is a significant part of nursing education. The way an instructor treats a student in the clinical environment definitely impacts that student’s learning (Jamshidi, Molazem, Furkhondeh, Torabizadeh & Majid, 2016). However, I think how personnel and nurses treat the student also impacts their ability to learn. I use what we experience in these settings as an opportunity to teach the students. These issues they will face when they become nurses aren’t addressed in class. I see this as my opportunity to instill in them what it really means to be a nurse and advocate for the patient. I also realize the behavior I exhibit in the clinical setting sets a standard for my students, not only how I treat the patient but also how I handle difficult personnel because they will be faced with this someday.
