Coding importance in qualitative analysis

Qualitative data analysis is both art and science. That is because it involves assigning values to descriptions, statements, and observed behaviors. If you had a collection of letters—for example, love letters—you could qualitatively analyze these letters and attempt to determine the most common topics discussed within them, typical hopes and fears the authors have, and perhaps even make inferences about the cultural norms regarding courtship and love of the culture from which the letters came. As you might imagine, this would necessitate a great deal of interpretation on your part. You would need to analyze the letters for meaning, assign values to symbolic content, and seek to understand the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the letters’ authors within their given setting. Criminal justice researchers conduct a similar process—called coding—when they analyze qualitative research data from field research, surveys, or other qualitative methods.

An explanation of why coding is important in qualitative analysis. Then explain the differences among open, axial, and selective coding. Finally, provide examples of data for which each type of coding might be appropriate and explain why. Be specific and support your responses with references.
